Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Diseases Awareness Day 2025: How to get involved

The theme of this year's Awareness Day is "Be informed, be connected."

Oct. 20, 2025, marks the eighth annual International Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Diseases Awareness Day. On this day, patients with systemic mastocytosis (SM) and other mast cell conditions will connect with physicians and researchers to share their stories and advocate for change.

The Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Diseases International Committee was created in 2018 by 23 organizations across 21 nations with the goal of improving communication between patients and the doctors and researchers who study these diseases.

This year, the campaign’s slogan is “Be informed, be connected.” This theme promotes not only engagement with experts and patient organizations, but also improved education surrounding mast cell diseases.

There are many ways to show your support on International Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Diseases Awareness Day. If you live in the United States, you can encourage your governor to proclaim October 20 as Mast Cell Disease Awareness Day. Some states that have already done so include Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Tennessee.

Landmarks throughout the world will also light up purple, the official campaign color, to commemorate the day. The color represents the purple dye that researchers use in the lab to visualize mast cells. In past years, buildings across several continents have participated.

Social media is an easy way to get involved as well. The committee provides logos and ribbons in many languages to download and share online. Patients can share their personal stories alongside these visuals to help spread awareness. Individuals can also host social media fundraisers to help raise money for improved mast cell research.

Participating in-person is as easy as wearing a purple ribbon with white polka dots, which represent the hives and rashes that patients often experience. This small accessory can serve as a simple conversation starter and symbol of solidarity.
